National Pollution Control Day is observed annually on December 2nd to raise awareness about the importance of controlling and reducing pollution to protect the environment and ecology.

The day commemorates the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984, a catastrophic industrial accident that caused widespread death and environmental damage. The tragedy highlighted the urgent need for pollution control measures and led to the enactment of the Indian Environmental Protection Act of 1986.

The primary objective of National Pollution Control Day is to educate people about the adverse effects of environmental pollution and promote sustainable practices.

It emphasizes the role of individuals, industries, and governments in implementing effective pollution control strategies.

National Pollution Control Day 2023 Theme

The theme for National Pollution Control Day 2023 is “Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet”. This theme emphasises the interconnectedness of environmental protection and sustainable development. It underscores the need for adopting environmentally friendly practices to achieve sustainable development and ensure a healthy planet for future generations.

What we can do as responsible senior citizens of India:

Whether it’s the Himalayan ranges or Kanyakumari, we need to acknowledge that due to several reasons, we stand at the brink of significant environmental changes on our planet that will affect us and our children, their children and future generations.

Pollution has affected our air, water, soil and senses – all the elements that give us fundamental sustenance and well-being.

Let us be more proactive by taking action.

Be aware of the amount of energy we consume by way of cars, electricity etc. Find ways to reduce our carbon impact by sharing energy resources and desisting from using more fuels and fossil fuels.

Put pressure on local, private and governmental bodies to support life by taking drastic steps to contain and curb all forms of pollution.

Reflect on pollution’s impact on health, wildlife, and the ecosystem;  a call to action for a cleaner and greener future, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility and proactive measures to mitigate pollution levels for a healthier tomorrow.
