F C Kohli, Father of Indian Computer Industry, passes away

Veteran Indian computer industry captain Faqir Chand Kohli popularly referred to as the Father of the Indian Computer Industry passed away earlier today (November 26, 2020). Born on March 19, 1924, Mr FC Kohli was founder and first CEO of Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest software consultancy company (Read TCS statement here).

In the January 15, 2020 issue, Seniors Today magazine had interviewed the veteran industry and his activist wife Swarn Kohli. The Kohlis reminisced their links with Pakistan in the cover story.

Mr Kohli joined Tata Electric Companies in 1951 and helped to set up the load despatching system to manage the system operations. He became director of Tata Electric Companies in 1970. He was the first CEO of TCS which pioneered India’s IT Revolution and helped the country to build the $100 billion+ IT Industry.

States a mention on a communique issued on Tata Sons website on an unrelated issue: “Be it the propagation of computerisation in India at a time when no one realised its potential, or bringing the benefits of IT, Mr Kohli saw IT as an instrument of national development. A visionary and pioneer by nature, is acknowledged as the ‘Father of the Indian Software Industry’.
