Middle-of-the-road cinemas
Golmaal (1979):
Commercial Hindi cinema goes totally berserk
Hrishikesh Mukherjee did not start out
people of three different faiths—hence making comedies, but ended up directing
the title. It had bonkers scenes like the charming slice-of-life films that had modest
three (Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, budgets and were often successful even
Rishi Kapoor) brothers giving blood to without stars. He was the leader of the
an old woman (Nirupa Rai) unaware that middle-of-the-road cinema, along with
she is their mother, or the blind mother Gulzar, Basu Chatterjee and Sai Paranjpye;
miraculously getting her sight back and this Amol Palekar-Utpal Dutt comedy
after a devotional song, and Anthony’s of errors was this style of cinema at its best—
hilarious drunken scene in front of that pleased the audience, yet did not stoop
the mirror. Logic out, audience in, and to conquer. For Hrishida fans it is always
years of preposterous, anything-goes a toss-up between Golmaal and Chupke-
filmmaking that gave commercial cinema Chupke (cast of stars playing against type)
a bad name. for all time favourite comedy.
