Do you really need a supplement—or is your food doing the job?
Magnesium is having a moment.
Walk into a pharmacy or browse online and you will find magnesium marketed for almost everything: better sleep, calmer nerves, fewer cramps, stronger bones, improved energy, better digestion and even a healthier brain.
There is magnesium glycinate, citrate, oxide, chloride and several other forms. There are powders, capsules, gummies, sprays and magnesium-containing drinks.
But behind all the marketing is a much less glamorous—and much more important—truth:
Magnesium is an essential mineral. Your body genuinely needs it.
It is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions, including normal muscle and nerve function, blood glucose regulation, blood pressure, protein production, and the formation of bone and DNA.
The question for older adults, however, isn’t simply:
“Should I take magnesium?”
It is:
“Am I getting enough, and do I have a reason to take more?”
That is a much better question.
Why magnesium matters as we age
Magnesium doesn’t suddenly become important when we turn 60. We need it throughout life.
But ageing can make maintaining adequate magnesium status more complicated.
Older adults tend to consume less magnesium than younger adults. In addition, magnesium absorption from the gut can decrease with age, while urinary losses can increase. Chronic conditions and commonly used medicines may add another layer to the problem.
This doesn’t mean that every older person is magnesium deficient.
In fact, significant symptomatic magnesium deficiency caused solely by a low dietary intake is uncommon in otherwise healthy people.
But certain older adults are more vulnerable—particularly those with gastrointestinal disorders, type 2 diabetes, poor nutritional intake or long-term alcohol dependence, as well as people taking medicines that affect magnesium levels.
What does magnesium actually do?
Think of magnesium as one of the body’s quiet backstage workers.
It helps muscles contract and relax. It supports normal nerve signalling. It participates in energy production and glucose metabolism. It contributes to maintaining healthy bones and is involved in the production of proteins and DNA.
This is why magnesium deficiency can eventually produce symptoms affecting several systems.
Early symptoms can include:
- loss of appetite
- nausea
- vomiting
- fatigue
- weakness
More severe deficiency can cause numbness or tingling, muscle cramps and contractions, seizures and abnormal heart rhythms.
But here’s an important caution:
These symptoms are not proof of magnesium deficiency.
A tired person may be tired for dozens of reasons.
A person with cramps may have several possible causes.
Poor sleep, weakness, constipation or anxiety cannot automatically be blamed on magnesium.
This is where supplement culture can get ahead of science.
How much magnesium do you actually need?
For adults aged 51 and over, the recommended daily intake is:
Men: 420 mg a day
Women: 320 mg a day
These figures refer to magnesium from all sources, including food, beverages, supplements and medications.
And this brings us to one of the most confusing numbers in the magnesium conversation.
You may have heard that adults should not exceed 350 mg of supplemental magnesium a day.
That is correct—but it needs explaining.
The 350 mg upper limit applies to magnesium from dietary supplements and magnesium-containing medicines, not to magnesium naturally present in food.
So eating a diet rich in magnesium-containing foods is not the same as taking 350 mg in a capsule.
The best magnesium supplement may be sitting in your kitchen
Before reaching for a bottle, look at your plate.
Magnesium is naturally present in a wide variety of foods, particularly:
- nuts such as almonds and cashews
- peanuts
- seeds, especially pumpkin and sesame seeds
- beans and lentils
- chickpeas
- whole grains
- millets
- green leafy vegetables
- soy foods
- some dairy foods
This makes magnesium-rich eating remarkably compatible with a traditional Indian diet.
A simple Indian magnesium day
Breakfast:
A bowl of oats or millet porridge topped with nuts and seeds.
Lunch:
Dal + leafy vegetables + whole-grain roti or brown rice.
Snack:
A small handful of almonds or peanuts.
Dinner:
Chana, rajma or another pulse with vegetables and a whole grain.
No expensive powder required.
No exotic “superfood” required.
Just a varied diet built around whole and minimally processed foods.
The NIH’s general position is that nutritional needs should primarily be met through food, with supplements used when dietary intake is inadequate or there is a specific reason for supplementation.
But what about magnesium glycinate?
This is where things become interesting.
Magnesium supplements come in different forms, including citrate, chloride, lactate, aspartate and oxide. Magnesium glycinate is also widely marketed.
Different forms contain different amounts of elemental magnesium and can differ in how well they are absorbed and how they affect the digestive system.
For example, some magnesium salts are more likely to have a laxative effect.
So don’t assume that:
“Magnesium is magnesium.”
It isn’t quite that simple.
And don’t choose a product merely because the label says glycinate, citrate or advanced absorption.
Look at the elemental magnesium listed on the Supplement Facts or nutrition label. That is the amount that matters when calculating your supplemental intake.
Can magnesium help you sleep?
This is one of the biggest claims made by the supplement industry.
Magnesium is involved in normal nerve and muscle function, and researchers continue to investigate its possible role in sleep and other aspects of health.
But an essential nutrient should not automatically become a treatment simply because a biological connection sounds plausible.
If you are sleeping badly, consider the bigger picture:
Are you getting enough daylight?
Are you physically active?
Are you drinking too much caffeine?
Is alcohol disrupting your sleep?
Are you waking to urinate?
Could pain, anxiety, sleep apnoea or medication be involved?
Sometimes the answer to poor sleep isn’t in a capsule.
What about muscle cramps?
This is another area where magnesium has acquired almost legendary status.
But cramps have many possible causes.
Dehydration, prolonged or unusual exercise, certain medications, circulation or nerve problems and other medical conditions can all play a role.
Magnesium deficiency can cause muscle cramps, particularly when deficiency is significant, but that doesn’t mean every nighttime leg cramp is a magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium and the brain: promising, but don’t overpromise
The brain needs magnesium too.
That fact has led to a growing number of claims about magnesium supplements and memory, mood, anxiety and dementia.
This is an area worth watching scientifically.
But we should resist turning interesting biological research into certainty.
There is currently no basis for telling seniors that taking a magnesium supplement will prevent dementia.
Brain health is influenced by a much larger collection of factors—physical activity, blood pressure, diabetes, sleep, hearing, diet, social connection and cardiovascular health among them.
Magnesium is one piece of the nutritional puzzle, not a magic brain pill.
The medicine cabinet matters
This is particularly important after 60 because many older adults take several prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
Magnesium can interact with certain medicines or alter their absorption.
For example:
Some osteoporosis medicines
Magnesium can reduce the absorption of oral bisphosphonates if taken too close together.
Some antibiotics
Magnesium can bind to certain antibiotics and reduce their absorption.
Some diuretics
Depending on the type, diuretics can either increase or decrease magnesium losses through urine.
Long-term proton pump inhibitors
Medicines used to reduce stomach acid can, in some people, contribute to low magnesium levels when used for prolonged periods.
And there is another easily overlooked source:
Laxatives and antacids
Some contain significant amounts of magnesium.
A person may therefore be getting magnesium from a supplement and from a laxative or indigestion remedy without realising that the amounts add up.
Before starting a magnesium supplement, review your entire medicine and supplement list with your doctor or pharmacist.
And then there are the kidneys
This is perhaps the most important safety message for older adults.
Healthy kidneys help remove excess magnesium.
But when kidney function is impaired, the body may not be able to get rid of excess magnesium efficiently.
Very high magnesium intakes can therefore become dangerous, particularly in people with significant kidney impairment. Severe magnesium toxicity can cause low blood pressure, weakness, breathing difficulties, abnormal heart rhythms and, in extreme cases, cardiac arrest.
So if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function, don’t self-prescribe magnesium.
“It’s a mineral” is not a safety guarantee.
Food first. Supplement when there is a reason.
This may be the most sensible magnesium philosophy for most seniors.
Do you regularly eat pulses?
Nuts and seeds?
Green leafy vegetables?
Whole grains or millets?
A varied diet makes it much easier to obtain magnesium alongside fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial plant compounds.
A supplement may have a place when dietary intake is inadequate, absorption is impaired, a medication or medical condition affects magnesium status, or a healthcare professional has identified a need.
But more is not necessarily better.
The Magnesium Checklist for Seniors
Before you start taking a magnesium supplement, ask yourself:
✓ Am I eating magnesium-rich foods regularly?
✓ Do I actually have a reason to suspect inadequate magnesium?
✓ Do I have kidney disease or reduced kidney function?
✓ Am I taking a diuretic, proton pump inhibitor, antibiotic or osteoporosis medicine?
✓ Am I already taking a laxative or antacid containing magnesium?
✓ Have I checked how much elemental magnesium my supplement actually provides?
✓ Have I discussed it with my doctor if I take several medicines?
These seven questions could save you from taking a supplement you don’t need—or overlooking one that might genuinely be useful.
So, should you take magnesium after 60?
There is no universal yes or no.
Some older adults may benefit from supplementation.
Others are already getting enough from food.
And some need medical evaluation before taking it.
The important thing is to separate need from marketing.
Magnesium is not a miracle mineral.
Nor is it a useless supplement.
It is an essential nutrient that performs hundreds of important jobs in the body—and deserves to be treated with the same respect we give any other nutrient.
The wise approach to magnesium after 60 isn’t “more”.
It is “enough”.
And often, enough begins not in a bottle, but on the plate.
KNOW YOUR MAGNESIUM
Not all magnesium supplements are the same
Walk into a pharmacy and you may find magnesium citrate, glycinate, oxide, chloride and several other forms. They all provide magnesium, but they are not interchangeable in how well they are absorbed, how much elemental magnesium they provide, or how they affect the digestive system.

A word about “elemental magnesium”
This is one of the most important things to understand when reading a supplement label.
A bottle may say that it contains 500 mg of magnesium citrate, for example. That does not necessarily mean that you are getting 500 mg of magnesium itself.
What matters is the amount of elemental magnesium stated on the label.
So don’t compare products simply by looking at the large number printed on the front of the bottle.
Which one is best?
There is no single magnesium form that is best for every senior.
The appropriate form depends on why magnesium is being taken, the amount of elemental magnesium required, digestive tolerance, other medicines and the individual’s health—particularly kidney function.
