Deepa Gahlot picks memorable films from 1973 - 10 each in Hindi and English
Ten Memorable Hindi Films of 1973:
For Hindi cinema, the Seventies were a
particularly rich era, with a wide variety
of films being made. Films released in 1973
turn 50 this year, and some of them remain
memorable, either because of new stars,
music or interesting subjects. The list of
ten does not comprise the biggest successes
of the year—does anyone remember Yash
Chopra’s Daag or Manmohan Desai’s Aa
Gale Lag Ja with any fondness? Jugnu,
Loafer, Kahaani Kismat Ki, maybe, because
of Dharmendra, but they were formula
commercial films.
So, in alphabetical order, 10 films that
have stood the test of time:
Abhimaan:
Only Hrishikesh Mukherjee could have
got Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri
to play a couple whose marriage is strained

because of professional
jealousy. He plays Subir,
a popular singer who
falls in love with simple
village girl Uma’s voice
and encourages her to
take up playback singing,
but when her fame exceeds his, he starts
to resent her. SD Burman’s magical
soundtrack had such evergreen gems as
Teri bindiya re, Loote koi man ka nagar, Ab
to hai tumse, Meet na mila re man ka, Piya
bina.
Achanak:
Taking inspiration from the real life
sensational Nanavati case, KA Abbas wrote
and Gulzar directed a tense emotional
thriller, in which Major Ranjeet Khanna
(Vinod Khanna) is sentenced to death
