In which parallel universe does the US have a Black female president? If Kamala Harris had been elected, G20 might not have been such a fantasy.
Because Viola Davis plays Madam President, Danielle Sutton, she gets away in a Die Hard style action flick, interestingly, directed by a woman, Patricia Riggen.. So double cheer!
She has a supportive husband Derek (Anthony Anderson), a rebellious tech wiz daughter, Serena (Marsai Martin) and good-natured son Demetrius (Christopher Farrar), who, at one point watching mom and sis go into baddie- bashing mode asks his dad, “Are you sure we are related?”
The daughter’s antics force, Danielle to cart her family to Cape Town, where world leaders have gathered for the G20 Summit, in a hotel guarded like a fortress. (Yes, a white kurta-pyjama is spotted in the crowd).
However, there is a breach, aided by an insider, and ruthless mercenary, Rutledge (Anthony Starr) takes all the VIPs hostage, as he maneuvers to crash the world’s currencies and make billions, through cryptocurrency.
What he didn’t bargain for is Danielle’s battle readiness, which is a combination of her military experience and solid hand-to-hand combat training (if she is seen practicing early in the film, of course, it will come in handy later.) She had grabbed the presidency on the basis of a magazine cover, showing her in uniform, rescuing a wounded child.
At the Summit, she intends to introduce a plan for digital currency to help the world’s poor, and is called “bulldozer” by the British Prime Minister Oliver Everett (Douglas Hodge), who supposedly does not like women. He and IMF’s Elena Romano (Sabrina Impacciatore), intend to oppose her proposal and cut her down to size…Little do they know what’s coming their way!
As we know now, eradicating world hunger is not on any white male leader’s agenda!
Danielle escapes the meeting venue, with her two opponents, South Korea’s courageous First Lady, Han Min-Seo (MeeWha Alana Lee) and her loyal Secret Service agent Manny Ruiz (Ramón Rodriguez).
Dressed in red satin, minus the heels she wisely ditched for sneakers, Danielle does what it takes to thwart Rutledge and his armed goons, who make the common mistake of underestimating a woman. Women if the unflappable Serena and Han Min-Seo are counted.
G20 is fast-paced fun, just what a popcorn entertainer should be like. And it’s not mindless.
