As the sun rises on 21st June 2025, millions across the world will come together once again to honour the ancient practice of yoga on the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY). This year’s celebration, themed ‘Yoga Sangam’, promises to be more inclusive, meaningful and impactful than ever before.
The Significance of IDY
Declared by the United Nations in 2014, International Day of Yoga is observed annually on 21st June – the summer solstice and the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Since its inception, the day has served to raise awareness about the immense physical, mental and spiritual benefits of yoga. Each year, it has grown into a global phenomenon, transcending cultural and national boundaries.
Yoga Sangam – A Confluence of Practices and People
The 2025 theme, Yoga Sangam, meaning “a confluence of yoga”, embodies the spirit of unity through diversity. The term ‘Sangam’ symbolises a coming together — of traditions, disciplines, communities and individuals — to celebrate the universal values that yoga represents: balance, harmony, resilience and inner peace.
This flagship event of IDY 2025 will showcase yoga’s ability to connect – not just mind and body, but also people from all walks of life. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, in collaboration with numerous international and regional bodies committed to wellness and holistic health.
Global and Local Celebrations
Yoga Sangam will feature mass yoga demonstrations in iconic locations worldwide — from the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi to the beaches of Bali, and from the Alps in Switzerland to the parks of New York. Special emphasis will be placed on regional yoga styles, indigenous wellness practices and cross-cultural participation.
In India, the main event will be held in a historically significant location, bringing together dignitaries, yoga gurus, practitioners and enthusiasts on a single platform. Community-level events, including workshops, seminars and yoga therapy sessions, will take place in schools, offices, public parks and healthcare institutions across the country and beyond.
Embracing Technology and Innovation
For the first time, Yoga Sangam will integrate immersive technology to enable wider participation. Through virtual reality experiences, online guided sessions, and live streaming, people from even the remotest corners of the world will be able to join in and experience the collective energy of the day.
A dedicated mobile app and digital wellness portal will also be launched as part of the event, offering access to curated yoga programmes, multilingual content, and health tracking tools.
Promoting Sustainable and Healthy Living
In line with global efforts to promote sustainability, IDY 2025 will highlight the role of yoga in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Themes like climate consciousness, mental health awareness, and social harmony will be interwoven into the programming.
Workshops will address how yogic principles can guide individuals and communities towards more mindful, eco-friendly lifestyles — focusing on moderation, non-violence (ahimsa), and simplicity.
As we mark the 11th International Day of Yoga with Yoga Sangam, we are reminded of yoga’s timeless relevance. In an increasingly fragmented world, yoga serves as a unifying force — fostering balance, compassion, and clarity. The celebration is not just about physical postures, but about cultivating awareness, connecting to our inner selves, and contributing to a healthier, more peaceful world.
So wherever you are, roll out your yoga mat, take a deep breath, and become part of this global movement, in mind, body and spirit. Let us meet at the Sangam — the confluence of heart, health and harmony.
