Col (Retd) Ranbir Singh, who retired in 1990, is a third-generation officer. His father Brig Sukhdev Singh was also awarded the Vir Chakra for the 1947-48 action and Military Cross in World War II. His brothers also joined the army and the son of the eldest brother was killed in action in Sri Lanka.
