Do you know that every year the power of information doubles?
So in ten years information will be a thousand fold and in twenty years, a million fold. That is the alarming rate at which information is growing and available to us.
Do you also know that each year 98% of your body tissues are replaced, your body tissues are recycled every single year of your existence?
So your tissues are replaced, however your organs need to last a lifetime.
Your sixties are a big decade, for most it is a completion of 70-80% of your life.
You may be planning to put your work life behind you and retire; it is also the best time to take charge of your health; health of mind and body. Make your retirement not about resting but about working toward a long life of health and happiness. While all of the change can be both exciting and scary, there is no better time to start working on a new YOU.
Nowhere is it written that at sixty you cannot start living your best life, in fact you have more time than ever to spend on yourself, focus on being healthy and feeling great. The reward is reaching your maximum health, which they say is your biggest wealth.
Beginning your new lifestyle is half the battle won. “It takes the brain twenty-one days to make or break a habit” So make a list of the habits you want to break and the ones you want to inculcate. That’s the first step towards the new YOU.
Once you have your list, pick the easiest three habits you would like to rid yourself of and add one new habit you want to befriend. For the next twenty-one days, consciously focus on these and as the days advance, you will find it easier and easier to let go. Trust me this works.
Here’s a list to help you unclutter your life
Stop worrying about everyone; Life happens and it also takes care of itself. To understand this statement, here is a conversation between parents, a child and the therapist.
“Babita sits before me fairly drowning in stress. Her parents, who’ve come to the session with her, would do anything to eliminate her anxiety disorder and the panic attacks that go with it.
“We’re so worried,” says Babita’s mother, Jyoti.
“Mom, Dad,” says Babita, “please don’t worry. It just puts pressure on me.”
Jyoti’s imploring eyes stay fixed on me. “What can we do?”
“Did you hear what she just said?” I ask.
“She’s suffering,” Dev, Babita’s dad, tells me.
“And what did she ask?”
“She needs to stop being so tense,” says Jyoti.
“Actually, she asked you both to stop worrying,” I say.
“Yes!” Babita shouts.
“Well, of course we’ll keep worrying,” says Dev. “It’s our job.”
Babita turns to me and whispers, “Help.”
Here is how you stop worrying and start living:
Think of someone you’re worried about. Now replace worry with something else: creativity, singing, listening to music, a walk, call a friend or Sudoku. I’m serious. It truly will calm you and leave some space for the person to recover and revive herself.
Its time where less is more; Give away anything that you have not worn or used for a year. Surprise the needy with gifts galore.
Visit a therapist to rid yourself of all the muck you have stored in your memory bank. Speaking to a stranger/ professional gives better results. Trust me this lightens your yolk and frees your soul.
Here’s a list to embrace goodness into your life
Exercise your body and soul through a workout routine and meditation. It’s the best gift you can give yourself. Don’t let your body retire ever.
Feel good around people, In adulthood, for some it can feel next to impossible to make new friends, so joining groups or associations or a class to interact with people who share your interests is a good idea.
Don’t get stuck with household chores, plan your week, this way you have time to enjoy other hobbies.
Unplug, yes, have a couple of days a month where you unplug. Go off social media, house hold chores and stay in wanderlust, doing just nothing. It rejuvenates the mind and soul.
Keep adding and subtracting to the list. If some of these habits create stress or just don’t fit your lifestyle, ditch them. With a little time and practice, you’ll figure out what does and doesn’t work for you. Your brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout your life. Do your best and forget about the rest.
Now that you have a head start, don’t waste a minute to grab your new YOU and you will feel the magic of the universe upon you as you dance away the days.
Make the rest of your life, the best of your life!
