Of Fathers and Father Figures

WHAT MAKES A DAD

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle’s flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,  He called it … Dad             ~~Author Unknown.~~

How did Father’s Day originate?

On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia Church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration. The next year, Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, went to local churches, government officials, the YMCA requesting to engage with her in trying to establish an official equivalent to Mothers’ Day for male parents. Her idea and was successful.

Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Fathers’ Day on June 19, 1910. The USA, Canada, The UK, France, India, China, Japan, The Philippines and South Africa, every year on the third Sunday of June, honour Fathers’ Day.

Father as a verb is the maker of children.

Father is a male biological parent who may or may not raise his child.

A Father’s role as a family man is one of a leader, a protector, an advisor to his family bringing them together to know right from wrong.

A Father is also a man who helped found or invent something. It’s a title of that entity or invention.

What is the difference between a father and a father figure?

Your biological father a male parent, a father-in-law, stepfather, or adoptive father or any male ancestor, especially the founder of a family or line,

maybe called Dad, Daddy, Papa, Pop, Abba, Abu or Father. His involvement makes all the difference in a child’s life, letting children make mistakes and support them like a pillar of strength, care and discipline. His work is endless and oftentimes thankless.

Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self confidence promoting inner growth and strength.

“Fathers, like mothers, are not born.
Men grow into fathers- and fathering is a very important stage in their development.” David M. Gottesman.

A father figure, usually an older man, could be a mentor or someone you look up to, normally one with power, authority or strength. One with whom one can identify on a deeply psychological level and who generates emotions generally felt towards one’s father.

OF WHAT FROM THEE I LEARN.

“You are old, Father William,” the young man said,
    “And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head—
    Do you think, at your age, it is right?”

“In my youth,” Father William replied to his son,
    “I feared it might injure the brain;
But now that I’m perfectly sure I have none,
    Why, I do it again and again.”

“You are old,” said the youth, “as I mentioned before,
    And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door—
    Pray, what is the reason of that?”

“In my youth,” said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
    “I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment—one shilling the box—
    Allow me to sell you a couple.”

“You are old,” said the youth, “and your jaws are too weak
    For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak—
    Pray, how did you manage to do it?”

“In my youth,” said his father, “I took to the law,
    And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
    Has lasted the rest of my life.”

“You are old,” said the youth, “one would hardly suppose
    That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose—
    What made you so awfully clever?”

“I have answered three questions, and that is enough,”
    Said his father; “don’t give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
    Be off, or I’ll kick you down stairs!”[2]

On this Fathers’ Day, 20, June 2021

Here’s a toast to all Fathers and Father figures.

“May thy life be long and happy, thy cares and sorrows few;
And the many friends around thee, prove faithful, fond and true.
May your voyage through life be as happy and as free as the dancing waves on the deep blue sea.

May your joys be as deep as the ocean and your misfortunes as light as its foam.

Let’s raise our glasses and then imbibe
To the fathers’
Who founded this tribe!”
