Food Review: PizzaExpress

If you eat at a PizzaExpress restaurant rather than order in, there is a huge difference in taste. At the outlet, the pizza comes piping hot out of the oven and straight to the table—this makes all the difference. There must be some method of insulating the pizza box so that it is reasonably warm by the time it reaches the customers, writes Vickram Sethi.

PizzaExpress is amongst the expensive pizza restaurants. Eating there is a different experience, but ordering it on Zomato is not a great idea. Here is my review based on my order on Zomato.

It took 50 mins to order to get delivered.

Spaghetti Aglio- Olio1.  Spaghetti Aglio- Olio

The price on the menu says Rs. 455, and we overlooked the cost of the extra toppings –  jalapenos , mushrooms, tomatoes and pesto sauce  -cost us Rs. 50/- each so that worked out to Rs. 655. The spaghetti was dry, there were 5 pieces each (something as little as this) of mushrooms, tomatoes and jalapenos. The spaghetti was still warm, eating it in the restaurant it would merit a 6/10. Here I would give it a 4/10.

Cippolla Picante Pizza2. Cippolla Picante Pizza

The Pizza arrived cold. It was a perfect thin crust pizza. It would have been edible had it been even warm. The pizza was rubbery and I didn’t want to risk my dentures. I would give it a 1/10.

Risotto Polo Fungi3. Risotto Polo Fungi

The Risotto was at the right temperature. The basil pesto coming through nicely, rocket leaves making their own contribution to the taste. The cost is Rs. 445, and I added Mozzarella, which was another Rs 135. I would give it a 5/10.

Barbeque Chicken Wings4. Barbeque Chicken Wings

6 pieces of warm chicken wings nicely coated with barbeque sauce. The chicken was tender. Cost – Rs.495.  It was the best part of the meal. I would give it a 6/10.

Combo Of 2 Veg and 2 Non Veg Pizzas5. Combo Of 2 Veg and 2 Non Veg Pizzas

Their menu also give an option of a combo of four 6 inch pizzas costing Rs 975. First and foremost I thought the pizza base should have been a well cooked. The taste of dough overpowered the pizza toppings and that ruined the taste.

The two non- veg pizza were:

a.)  Spicy Chicken and Corn Pizza. Unfortunately there was no corn on the pizza (photo attached).

b.) The Second non veg was pepperoni pizza. The pepperoni was well cooked and had a certain flavor of his own, good but not great.

 Two veg pizzas were:

c.)Tomato and basil. This had no flavour, the uncooked dough overpowering the topping.

d.)The mushroom and artichokes pizza.  was the best of the four, both the flavours coming through nicely.

Choco Cheese cake6. Choco Cheese cake

It was a perfect combination of chocolate and cheese, I would give it a 6/10.

At the outlet, the pizza comes piping hot out of the oven and straight to the table—this makes all the difference. There must be some method of insulating the pizza box so that it is reasonably warm by the time it reaches the customers, and that goes for all the other food as well. I would eat in the Pizza Xpress restaurant but I am not sure if I want to order it on Zomato.
