Here are five old – time classic desserts that we feel deserve a comeback
1. Pineapple Upside Down Cake
Decorated with rings of pineapple (tinned, but we could do fresh as well) and glace cherries, it not only looked scrumptious, but it was also moist and syrupy with that divine hint of caramel. This was a no – fail delight at every gathering because it tasted as great as it looked.
2. Baked Alaska
Ice- cream, cake and a meringue topping. What could be better. Well, remember how the waiter used to flambé it for that touch of drama. We need more Baked Alaskas in our lives!
3. Trifle
Now there are variations of the good old trifle, which was the ultimate party dessert. Plus, it was and is so easy to make. Fruit, rum-soaked sponge, cream, custard, jelly – all the elements combined with perfection.
4. Bread and Butter Pudding
Buttered bread layered with custard, spices, dried fruit and nuts was a magical sweet dish. Though some clubs still serve it, bread and butter pudding used to be super popular.
5. Swiss Rolls
RTI in Bombay, used to do these best. Soft sponge rolled around a strawberry conserve or lemon curd. One couldn’t choose- you had to have both!
