Reminiscing: Lalita Laxminarayan

The God Sent Friend –Maya could not be traced anywhere. We continued to call her but failed to reach. Visited her place in Pune, but she had left , no idea where. This incident still brings tears to my eyes.

This happened in the year 1999. We had shifted to Bangalore from Mumbai , where our daughter Sanjivani was to continue her graduation BA. After doing her 1st year at Ramnarain Ruia, Matunga, she had to get admission into 2nd year in Bangalore.

Our nightmares started, when we realised Bangalore University does not have the combos of subjects that Sanjivani had cleared in first year. Nor were the admins of colleges very cooperative. They wanted her to repeat her 1st year, that was a big blow ( our daughter is a rank holder). After a lot of running around and battling with our views, we came back home,( we were silent throughout) My mind working on our next step.

We had already collected our transfer and leaving certificate from Mumbai. Going back was ruled out.

My brother and bhabhi in Pune, took leave from their busy schedule, and collected admission forms from Pune University. After a lot of fighting there too, they managed to get admission for Sanjivani as an external student. She would go to Pune to write her exams.

Our daughter was very depressed. She would miss her precious college life. Other than books, she is a wonderful singer, who won laurels for her college for 3consecutive years. She participated in a lot of curricular activities.

Missing all this as an external student was not what she had expected.

Next challenge erupted, when only the reference books were mentioned for subjects. It was not sensible to buy 4to5 books per subject, and that too will not be very useful. One needs proper notes.

We proceeded to Pune, where we could get some books from college book stalls. With syllabus in hand and prayer on our lips the two of us were silently going through all the rows having BA reference books. We almost collected a dozen books, but none were matching our requirements of answering an examination. We were totally lost, when there was a tap on my shoulder from behind.

I turned around to find a sweet girl asking me what we were looking for. We explained our predicament. In her words, ” Aunty you will not be able to get books here to study matter. I am a student at Fergusson College, with the same subject as yours. Why don’t you come to my college tomorrow, and take a Xerox copy of all of them? That will be of help.”

Our eyes were moist. We couldn’t believe all that happened.

Next day Maya was at the college gate with all the notes . After making a copy of the same , we had lunch at Savera Restaurant.

I could see sakshat Bhavani Mata ( our ishta devata) in this child, who sailed us through our difficult time. Sanjivani cleared her graduation  with flying colours……but Maya could not be traced anywhere. We continued to call her but failed to reach. Visited her place in Pune, but she had left , no idea where.

This incident still brings tears to my eyes.
