5 Tips to Avoid a Hangover

Follow our tips to have a drink or two, without suffering a hangover

Splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who’s  drunk too much knows the consequences. Alcohol leads to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Hangover cures are generally a myth. But there are things you can do to avoid one and, if you do have one, ease the discomfort.

Here are our 5 tips to avoid a hangover:
– Do not drink more than you know your body can cope with

If you’re not sure how much that is, be careful. How much is safe for an individual to drink will vary from person to person and depends on many factors, such as how much food they have eaten, how much water they have drunk, and how much sleep they have had, besides other factors.

The recommended amount per person is:

  • Up to one drink per day for women
  • Up to two drinks per day for men

– Measure your own drink

If you’re not at home and you are entrusting someone else to pour your drink, you won’t be certain of how much alcohol you’ve been consuming. It’s a good idea to monitor the amount of alcohol that goes into your drink.

– Do not drink on an empty stomach

Before you start drinking, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help to slow down your body’s absorption of alcohol.

– Do not drink dark coloured drinks

Many people are sensitive to dark coloured drinks. They contain natural chemicals called congeners, which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse.

Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic drink.

Fizzy drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your body. Water on the other hand hydrates your blood cells and maintains your oxygen levels preventing headaches, dizziness, and vertigo.

– Drink half a litre or more of water before you go to sleep

Plus, keep a glass of water by your bed to drink up if you wake up during the night.

– Avoid Congeners

Certain alcoholic beverages contain chemicals known as congeners. These chemicals are impurities and can contribute towards hangover symptoms.

Drinks high in congeners include:

  • whiskey, particularly bourbon
  • cognac
  • tequila

Drinks with low levels of congeners include:

  • vodka
  • rum
  • gin

It’s been a year we would all like to forget, but the illusion of alcohol is temporary, with far too many downsides. Have fun but remember not to overdo it. Hangovers can be terrible to deal with so keep in mind a tip or more that we’ve suggested and enjoy your celebrations!
