Does money matter as we grow older?

Here’s what a few of our seniors have to say…

Anita“As we grow older, we come to realize that true happiness cannot be bought with money alone. While financial stability is necessary to meet our basic needs, genuine happiness arises from within and is not dependent on external circumstances. Seniors have a unique opportunity to focus on what brings them joy and meaning, whether it’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or engaging in activities that give them a sense of purpose. Cultivating gratitude, acceptance, and spirituality can lead to a sense of inner peace and contentment that transcends material possessions. Ultimately, finding a balance between financial security and spiritual fulfillment is key to living a happy and fulfilling life”. – Anita De Rakshit, Jamshedpur

G D Sharma“Happiness is a state of mind. True happiness comes from within. Money cannot buy this state of mind. Inner happiness is the most precious of all treasures. We cannot make happiness dependent on outside or worldly possessions or pleasures. We find true happiness in the smallest of things or experiences around us – listening to or singing a song we like; eating a dish we love; meeting and spending time with a friend; going to a place we like, and so on. The happiness we feel in this way is always long lasting since it is internally motivated”. – GD Sharma, Chennai

Mohan“Money helps me in improving my economic wellbeing which certainly has an impact on my emotional well-being. It would be wrong to say money does not beget happiness. However, one has to understand that money by itself cannot bring happiness; it is demanded for what it can buy and more importantly it cannot buy stable relationships, trust and health! It’s a means to an end and not an END in itself”!  – Mohan Krishnan, Chennai

Laxmi narayan“It is important to strike an ideal balance between accumulating wealth and living a healthy quality life resulting in happiness. Money needs to be the “Enabler” to happiness rather than a problem you are saddled with the challenge of managing the wealth and lose your health in the bargain. What is the point of having a lot of money and not being able to enjoy life due to ill health? If you are hungry you need food for you cannot eat money. It should not be the state where ’wealth accumulates and men decay’. Don’t run after money, let Money run after you”.  – KV Laxminarayan (Lax), Bengaluru

Usha Jacob“Money indeed is extremely important in life – it gives you self-respect, brings a status in society gives you the means to enjoy life. It gives you the psychological comfort coz even having a maid or aid in advanced age with ailments depends on the size of your purse.

But money by itself cannot bring pleasure – it’s essential to keep ourselves physically & mentally sound to reap the benefits of our hard earned money. No amount of treasures can bring happiness unless you choose to be happy and contented from within.

To sum up, money can buy you an insurance policy but not health – it can gv you material luxuries but not longevity to enjoy. So please be contented – it brings peace & happiness along”!  – Usha Jacob, Bengaluru

JayalakshmiImagine a man sitting in a public park on a hot day under a giant banyan tree. Imagine another man sitting in the comfort of a plush AC room overlooking this same public park from the top floor of a grand building. They might both be happy for not being hot and uncomfortable, but the real question is how much do they value this sense of comfort that the tree or the AC provides.

Money can only buy you happiness if we can learn to truly appreciate it, truly value what it can bring us. – Jayalakshmi, Bengaluru
