Focus on Arthritis at Health Live session with Dr Rajveer Chinoy

A session on arthritis, diet for bone health, debunking myth such as calcium can cause kidney stones and many other concerns related to bones were addressed by Dr Rajveer Chinoy

On Saturday, September 19, 2020, Health Live @ Seniors Today hosted Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Rajveer Chinoy to address concerns on arthritis.

Dr Chinoy has worked in various specialised units around the UK for 12 years. He has undertaken arthroscopic knee surgery training in the UK and Singapore as also a Special Trauma training in Singapore and Bangkok. His specialties are Major Trauma, Joint Replacements and Adult Reconstructive ørthopaedics. He is currently attached to the Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai.

 1. Foods good for arthritis –

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish – salmon, mackerel, tuna, and herring.

Natural protein from edamame – soya bean, soyabean products, tofu and beans – kidney beans.

Healthy oils such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, safflower oil.

Berries for antioxidants – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries.

Vegetables such as broccoli and green leafy vegetables are high in calcium and Vitamin K.

Low-fat dairy products – skimmed milk, yogurt, and cheese are packed with calcium and Vitamin D that helps strengthen bone health.

Citrus fruits such as lime, lemon, oranges are not only great source of Vitamin C but also help calcium absorption.

Onions, garlic and leeks prevents cartilage from damaging.

Walnuts, pine-nuts, pistachios, almonds are beneficial for overall health.

 

2. Arthritis is not reversible – With exercise and a healthy lifestyle, you can prevent further damage of your bone health.

 

3. Consult a physiotherapist – If you are suffering from arthritis or osteoarthritis you should consult a physiotherapist on what kinds of exercises you should be doing to maintain bone health, and joint function.

 

4. Adequate exercise – If a 30-minute workout or walk is causing pain in your knees, try doing short workouts or walks for 10 minutes, two-three times a day. This will help you stay active and prevent bone health from worsening.

 

5. Find the cause of the pain – Painkillers will relieve from pain momentarily. It is essential to find the cause of the pain. If pain in the joints are persistent then you need to get yourself assessed to prevent the condition from worsening.

 

6. Numbness in fingers – Numbness experienced in the fingers of the hands while working, or in the evening, or while going to sleep is a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a neurological condition that needs to be assessed by your doctor.

 

7. Calcium supplements and kidney stones – Kidney stones are caused by inadequate fluidity and certain other metabolic problems. They occur in people who are deficient in calcium. There have been Japanese and German studies that proves calcium supplements does not causes kidney stones.

 

8. 15gms of calcium daily – Seniors should intake 1-1.5gms of calcium everyday either by have a calcium rich diet or with calcium supplements if you require them. However, you should consult your doctor before taking any calcium supplements. See: Optimal Calcium Requirements & Dietary Sources
